Janet Sarbanes is the author of the short story collections Army of One and The Protester Has Been Released, which was declared a best fiction book of 2017 by Entropy magazine. Her short fiction appears most recently in Air/Light magazine and the Los Angeles Review of Books. A 2017 recipient of a Creative Capital/Andy Warhol art writer's grant, Sarbanes has published art criticism and other critical writing in museum catalogues, anthologies, and journals such as East of Borneo, Afterall, and the Journal of Utopian Studies. Her essay on Shaker aesthetics and utopian communalism received the Eugenio Battisti prize from the Society for Utopian Studies. A book of essays about art and politics, Letters on the Autonomy Project, will be published by punctum books in May 2022. Sarbanes lives in Los Angeles and teaches in the MFA Creative Writing Program and the MA in Aesthetics and Politics at CalArts.

Janet Sarbanes was originally scheduled to appear on April 21, 2020, which was of course canceled; consequently, the last in-person Exhibit X reading before coronavirus struck was Gabriel Bump's on February 4, 2020. Exhibit X Fiction will return to Hallwalls in person in the fall (academic year 2022–2023) to begin its 20th year! (2003–2004 was Year 1!)
